The best alien Halloween costume ideas don't need a sewing machine, a glue gun or a free weekend. They need a good base, one strong story piece and a single prop that lands the joke. Below are five looks built around a graphic tee or hoodie you'll actually wear again on November 1: the Alien Cat, the Area 51 Runner, a UFO abduction couple, a 10-minute last-minute alien and a cold-night hoodie version.
Each one starts with a piece from our Halloween T-shirts and hoodies and adds things from a craft store or the back of a kitchen drawer.
The 3-part formula for any alien Halloween costume
Every alien costume that works has three parts: a plain base outfit, a story piece that tells people which alien you are, and one prop that finishes the joke. A graphic tee or hoodie is the story piece. Get those three right and nobody at the party will ask what you're supposed to be.
The base is the boring bit, and that's the point. Black, gray, silver or green pants or jeans let the graphic stand out.
The story piece does the talking. An alien cat, an Area 51 runner or a saucer mid-abduction tells a specific story, which reads better across a dark room than a generic "little green man."
The prop is where most costumes go wrong, usually by having five of them. Pick one: an antenna headband, a toy ray gun, a glow stick or a plush alien. You'll be holding a drink or a candy bag for most of the night, so one prop is plenty.
The Alien Cat (cat-lover approved)
The Alien Cat is the easiest crossover costume of the season: half house cat, half visitor from somewhere else. Our design shows an orange cat whose face splits open to reveal a green alien inside, as if the cat were a suit all along. Add cat ears, antennae and half-green face paint, and the costume is done.
To build it around the Alien Cat Costume hoodie:
- Ears and antennae in one. Twist two pipe cleaners around a cat-ear headband so they stick up between the ears. Top each one with a small pom-pom or a ball of foil.
- Split-face paint. Paint one half of your face as a cat (pink nose, whiskers) and the other half green, with one big black almond-shaped eye. It mirrors the design exactly, which is what makes people laugh when they spot it.
- Optional tail. A fuzzy scarf or a pair of stuffed tights pinned to your waistband does the job.
Use face paint made for skin, and test a little on your arm a day before. Halloween is a bad night to discover a reaction.
The Area 51 Runner
The Area 51 Runner is the costume for anyone who remembers the 2019 internet joke about storming a secret base in Nevada. Our Area 51 design shows a gray alien sprinting across the desert under the words "They can't stop us all," with a saucer in the sky behind. Style it with cargo pants, aviators and a toy ray gun.
The backstory: in June 2019, a Facebook event called "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" went viral as a joke and collected millions of RSVPs. When the date arrived that September, only a small crowd turned up near the gates.
To style the Area 51 runner T-shirt:
- Bottoms: cargo pants, a utility jumpsuit tied at the waist, or anything khaki or olive.
- Accessories: aviator sunglasses, a lanyard with a homemade "VISITOR" badge, and desert boots or beaten-up sneakers.
- The prop: a toy ray gun in a bright color, or an alien plush tucked under your arm as if you've just "rescued" it.
Keep any prop obviously toy-like. Plenty of venues and events turn away realistic replica weapons at the door.
The UFO Abduction (best for couples and groups)
The best alien couple costume is an abductor and an abductee: one person flies the saucer, the other is being beamed up. Pair our abduction design, a saucer lifting a tiny figure out of a pine forest, with our Certified UFO Pilot design, an alien in goggles and a flying cap giving a thumbs-up.
The abductee wears the UFO abduction T-shirt with pajama pants and slippers, as if they were taken straight from bed. A flashlight held under the chin adds the "beam."
The pilot wears the Certified UFO Pilot tee with aviator goggles, a scarf and a paper-plate saucer worn as a hat.
Bigger group? Add more abductees, plus one "witness" with a phone held up and a tinfoil hat. For an astronaut-and-alien version, one partner wears all white or silver and the other wears the pilot tee.
Last-minute alien costume in 10 minutes
A last-minute alien costume needs three things you probably already have: a tee with an alien or UFO on it, something green or silver, and something that can become antennae. Pipe cleaners, kitchen foil and a face-paint stick turn almost any outfit into an alien one in about ten minutes.
Minutes 0 to 3: antennae. Twist two pipe cleaners onto a plain headband and crumple a small ball of foil onto each tip.
Minutes 3 to 6: foil accents. Wrap foil cuffs around your wrists and tape a foil collar or belt in place. Over an all-black base, foil reads as "spacesuit" from across the room.
Minutes 6 to 10: the face. Sweep green or silver face paint across your cheekbones, add a few dots of glitter as "freckles," or paint one oversized black eye.
If Halloween is tomorrow, use what's already in your closet. If it's a couple of weeks away, you have time to order a proper story piece (see the timing section below).
Hoodie or tee? Dressing for cold October nights
If you'll be outside, go with the hoodie. It keeps you warmer through trick-or-treating, a backyard party or a long line at a haunted house, and with an antenna headband over the hood it still reads as a costume. A tee works best indoors, or layered over a long-sleeve top.
A costume nobody can see under a coat isn't doing its job. With a hoodie, the design stays visible all night.
Want the tee version for an indoor party? The Alien Cat Costume T-shirt carries the same design. Layer it over a black or green long-sleeve top if the evening turns chilly.
One practical tip: secure an antenna headband over a hood with two bobby pins, so it doesn't slide off every time you turn your head.
Order timing for made-to-order costumes
Order early. Every piece in our Halloween range is made to order, which means it's printed after you place your order rather than pulled from a shelf. Orders are dispatched within 2–3 business days, and delivery time depends on where you live, so check the shipping times to your country before you pick a date.
For Halloween on Saturday, October 31, order by Wednesday, October 21. That's at least 10 days before the big night, which leaves time for your piece to be made, dispatched and delivered, with a little buffer for busy late-October carriers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest alien Halloween costume?
A graphic alien tee or hoodie, a pair of antennae and one green or silver accent. The graphic tells the story, the antennae make it a costume, and a touch of face paint or foil finishes it. No sewing, no glue gun and no special shopping trip needed.
How do you make an alien cat costume for a human?
Start with an alien cat design, such as our Alien Cat Costume hoodie or tee, which shows a green alien hiding inside a cat suit. Add a cat-ear headband with pipe-cleaner antennae, then paint half your face as a cat and half as a green alien. A fuzzy scarf makes an easy tail.
What should I wear to an Area 51 themed party?
Wear a runner or "Storm Area 51" graphic tee with cargo pants or flight-suit pieces, aviator sunglasses and an alien plush you've "rescued." A homemade visitor badge on a lanyard is a cheap, funny finishing touch, and a bright toy ray gun works as long as it's obviously fake.
What's a good alien couple or group costume?
Abductor and abductee: one person wears a UFO pilot design with goggles, and the other wears an abduction design with pajamas and slippers, as if beamed up straight from bed. Groups can add more abductees, base security in black tees and sunglasses, or a witness with a phone and a tinfoil hat.
Can a hoodie be a Halloween costume?
Yes. Pick a hoodie with a costume-style graphic, such as an alien cat, and add a headband prop like antennae or ears. It's warmer than a tee for trick-or-treating and outdoor parties on cold October nights, and the design stays visible because you won't need a coat over it.
How do I make a last-minute alien costume?
Twist pipe cleaners onto a headband for antennae, add foil cuffs or a foil collar, and sweep green or silver face paint across your cheekbones. Wear it all over a dark outfit or any alien tee you already own. The whole look takes about ten minutes and uses things most homes already have.
What is Area 51, really?
Area 51 is a US Air Force facility in the Nevada desert, next to the dry Groom Lake bed. The CIA formally acknowledged it in documents released in 2013, which describe its role in testing the U-2 spy plane from the 1950s. UFO stories grew around it from the late 1980s.
When should I order a made-to-order Halloween tee?
Order by Wednesday, October 21, for Halloween on Saturday, October 31, which is at least 10 days ahead. Each piece is made to order, so it's printed after you check out and dispatched within 2–3 business days. Delivery time then depends on your country, so check our shipping page too.
